SARS CoV-2 with Paraquat Poisoning: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Keywords:
Paraquat, Herbicide, COVID-19.Abstract
Paraquat Dichloride is a contact herbicide, it is always fatal during human consumption, even in minimal quantities and there is no specific antidote for paraquat poisoning. ARDS, acute kidney injury with metabolic acidosis or multi-organ failure are the frequent causes of mortality. Paraquat generates reactive oxygen species which cause cellular damage via lipid peroxidation, activation of NF-κB, mitochondrial damage and apoptosis in many organs. As there is no specific antidote to paraquat, the aim of treatment must be to reduce systemic absorption and pursue aggressive decontamination and supportive management. Paraquat with COVID is a rare and challenging presentation, the successful discharge of this patient is also a unique event in literature. Most of it was attributed to aggressive management with proper ICU care
